7 Ways Curcumin, the Active ingredient in Turmeric, Benefits Your Health

September 1, 2018

Turmeric is a commonly used spice that originates from the Curcuma plant. We most likely know it for its spiciness and use in dishes such as curry. Curcumin is the active ingredient in the Turmeric that gives it the great health benefits we all love.

Turmeric has been extensively used within Chinese and Indian cultures, as an anti-inflammatory. Curcumin is best consumed in its pure sense, rather than as a component of curry powder or other spices.

Here are some of the top 7 benefits this awesome compound works.

1. Anti-Inflammatory

Curcumin, the oil that the turmeric provides is the scientifically proven anti-inflammatory that we love to use for inflammation reduction and pain control.  It also helps the body to fight infection and repair itself.

Curcumin, has been studied in numerous experiments, and has been shown to be equally as effective as typical anti-inflammatory medications but without the side effects. This is good news for those who suffer from joint conditions, such as arthritis, where inflammation plays a key role in exacerbating chronic pain.

Remember inflammation is the underlying cause of all chronic disease, so putting the “fire” out not only will give you pain relief but it will also help you avoid suffering from potentially fatal chronic disease like, heart disease and diabetes.

2. Pain Control

Since inflammation causes both pain and chronic disease it is super important to reduce pain, one because who wants to suffer in pain and two by turning off chronic disease causing processes.  Curcumin has been shown in numerous studies to reduce both pain and inflammation in the musculoskeletal system.

Reducing lower back and neck pain, headaches, arthritic pain and discomfort without the side effects of medication can’t be stress enough when we looking at improving a person’s over all health and well-being.

3. Improves Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn’s disease are common disorders that affect many people throughout the world and can be quite debilitating. Studies have shown benefit from taking Curcumin to reduce the inflammation in the gut.

Curcumin improved cell functions and reduced the symptoms. Certain symptoms such as mucosal ulceration were almost completely removed.

4. Indigestion and Heartburn Relief

Curcumin puts out the fire in your gut. It has also been shown to help with the common conditions of indigestion and heartburn. These are frequently experienced by individuals and can be incredibly frustrating and uncomfortable.

It can stimulate the gallbladder and increases bile production.  Curcumin is commonly give to improve overall digestion.

5. Heart disease

Heart disease is the number on killer in our country.  Keeping inflammation under control reduced cholesterol and reduces heart disease.  Since the Curcumin reduces inflammation, studies have shown that there is a protective effects on the heart. Initial research shows that Curcumin can help to reduce the build-up of plaque in the heart, a key contributor to heart attacks. It may help to prevent oxidized cholesterol, which is what damages blood vessels. Damaged blood vessels are a critical factor in many heart diseases, such as health attacks, strokes, and atherosclerosis.

6. Delays diabetes

Research has shown that Curcumin can delay the onset of diabetes. In a study, participants were tracked over a period of time and given either a placebo or curcumin tablets.

At the end of the study, not one participant who had taken the curcumin had developed diabetes. It is argued this finding is due to the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

7. Cancer prevention

Curcumin has been shown to have important antioxidant properties, which may help to protect cells against cancer, particularly in cells in the colon. Curcumin can help to protect vulnerable cells against free radicals, which can be harmful to the body.

Because not all supplements are created equal I am super picky about what I use with my patients.  Curcumin alone has poor bio-availability and therefore poor absorption.  This is the reason I recommend Curcuplex-95 by Xymogen.  It has a patented formula BCM-95 that increases the absorption of the nutrient.  Xymogen’s supplements are pharmaceutical grad and my only be purchased through physician’s due to their higher dosages, allowing you to take fewer pills with better results.

In the US supplements are not required to go through our FDA however this is not true in other countries such as Australia.   Xymogen’s supplements have passed both national and international standards of quality, bioavailability and effectives.  As a physician only supplement line if it super important that these nutrients are pure and work in a therapeutic setting.

I can assure you after 30 years in practice and looking at before and after lab tests these work and in a relatively quick period of time (3 months).  If you are interested in learning more about what you can do to help with pain and inflammation feel free to call McLaughlin Care and make an appointment 847-234-2346.
