FMS is a ranking and grading system that documents movement patterns that are key to normal function. By screening these patterns, the FMS readily identifies functional limitations and asymmetries. These are issues that can reduce the effects of functional training and physical conditioning and distort body awareness.

Soft-tissue extensibility has to do with the ability that a muscle can extend to a predetermined endpoint. We lose soft tissue extensibility through injury, poor movement patterns, and a sedentary lifestyle. Improving soft tissue extensibility will improve flexibility, strength, power, and range of motion, reducing pain and improving athletic performance.
Proprioception is our perception of the position and movement of our bodies. Proprioception can be reduced as we age, with traumatic injury, as well as poor postural habituation. Optimal neurological and proprioceptive function will reduce symptoms of pain, strengthen joints, tendons, and ligaments, as well as reduce risks for falling.
Stability, posture, and movement patterning are the major components in developing functional movement patterns. Stability has to do with the ability to maintain control of join movement by coordinating tissues around a joint. Posture is the static position that an individual holds when standing or sitting. Movement patterning is our brain’s ability to direct the body to perform a motor action. Training all three of these components will reduce the risk of getting injured, as well as optimizing
Functional loading has to do with our ability to produce maximal strength and power in a way that protects the integrity of our joint, reduces unnecessary movement, conserves more energy, and is performed pain-free. Training functional loading will increase our body's ability to handle physical stresses, which will, in turn, reduce the likelihood of injury as well as improve athletic performance.
